ARKANOID AIR DOH PETSCII

Check out ARKANOID AIR DOH PETSCII from Arok Party 2023! :)
Double entry for the Commodore 64 and Atari 2600!
Code is the same in the Atari 2600 Emu for the C64!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssBlBAzIw_g

The Atari 2600 version has more color, but three types of dynamic PETSCII are featured on the C64 version that can have interesting application in party games and scene demos.

Download the prg from the party link up top!

Somehow its impressive how you managed to make the C64 version even more ugly than the VCS one >_<

SingularCrew preferred the Atari version and played it first at the party.

They helped me to improve the C64 version and we included it in the download as a double feature for everyone to enjoy.

Which version do you like best, and what platform did you try them on?

lol! Thank you, I think.

The colorful gradient fades and vibrant pastel hues really shine on the VCS.

The C64's limited colorset is very challenging for such a powerful machine.

It's crap. Stop pretending you're creating anything of value.

I think you may like the SID tune which is intact in the original, it's generated in real time from a TIA chiptune.

I really like the HVSC but I would feel similarly if someone did that to the SIDs in the collection.

Yes, the HVSC is really one of the strong aspects of this release, also good choice of character set. If you own the VIC-II Kawari, you can also use your very own palette - only few people know this!

This is some serious case of Dunning-Krueger effect if I ever witnessed one.

The VIC-II Kawari looks really cool, amazing it is directly compatible with the original 8562 chip. I just read about it here:
http://accentual.com/vicii-kawari/

I like that the VIC-II Kawari adds extensions and that it allows you to dynamically switch between PAL and NTSC at boot, that feature complements the Atari 2600 emulation layer in Arkanoid Air DOH that can automatically render NTSC 60 Hz Atari games at 50 Hz on PAL Commodore systems without having to use PAL60 mode or hand tune the Kernel.

Dynamic user mode SID composition capability:
When you play Arkanoid Air DOH you can influence the SID tune, the gameplay re-sequences the Tracker Sequencer adjusting the counterpoint between the harmony and the melody.

There is a fun Tracker Sequencer toy to experiment with to create dynamic SID tunes here that illustrates the idea behind user mode SID tunes by putting a Tracker Sequencer on a tracker sequencer to allows notes, phrases and measures to be generated with various envelope settings and combined together into a composition you can record and play back using a 1K or 256 Byte RAM buffer. That might not seem like much memory but this production was designed for the Atari 2600 and the SuperCharger or CBS RAM hardware extensions.
It helps that SID tunes don't take much memory to store.

I like the idea of user mode SID tunes because many C64 games have great music but no sound effects or Vice Versa and the SID is such a powerful chip. I love the filters resonance effects possible between the wave forms.

Here is the link to try out this Prod on AtariAge for fans of the SID:

Nice Rainbow! Some interesting Trivia, I used to receive the Rainbow Seal of Approval from Falsoft on my productions in the 80's for quality in games and hardware demos.

Here are some videos of demos from the 80's that leverage hardware idiosyncrasies to create impossible Fx:
https://forums.atariage.com/topic/307907-impossible-taffyball-a..

And here's a 2016 Portland Retro Gaming Expo production "Starblitz Rainbow" that runs pixel perfect and cycle precise on the C64, but loses most of the color adding interesting stealth mode effects to the game that were not intended:
